The driver, called Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - SCSIAdapter - 9.3.0.221, first hit the public branch of Windows Updates on May 8. Following its release, reports of crashes and boot errors like “INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE” started to pile up on Reddit and other websites. According to PC Gamer, the issues were first reported in a test build pushed to members of the Windows Insider program. Despite those complaints, it was still released to the public. Based on comments left in a Reddit thread, it looks like the boot issues seem to have only affected computer builds running an AMD processor with a Gigabyte X570 motherboard. A software engineer with Microsoft wrote, “I am not certain at this time, but I believe it went to other Gigabyte boards and only has issues on the X570.” The update has since been pulled from Windows Updates completely, according to that same engineer. Microsoft uses a slow rollout validation mechanic to ensure there aren’t issues with driver updates that it puts out. The engineer believes that the update must have gone to machines that didn’t have any issues at first, which is why it wasn’t flagged by the system. Microsoft has yet to release any official information surrounding the problem. If you are one of the many unlucky users who installed the update, there are a few ways to go about removing it. If you can log into Windows, you can go back to a System Restore point from before you installed the update. Or, if your PC is getting stuck in a boot error, you can always try launching Startup Repair to remove the driver.
